Time to nut up or shut up

Trying to blog is a crazy thing for me because I am quite sporadic and non-sensical at the best of times, and trying to get my thoughts written down don't usually go too well.  Also I would rather procrastinate than actually, you know, "do stuff".
Anyway, Michelle inspired me to share about how I came about knowing that it was time to get le married, except I suck at these sort of things, but since I just can't say no to someone so beautiful (hehe), here goes.
So when we first started dating, I could say that marriage was the last thing on my mind.  In fact Michelle was fresh out of a super hurtful relationship and to be honest I just wanted to keep my distance to (selfishly) not get hurt in the same way.  Luckily God had other plans to circumvent my stupidity and we democratically came to the conclusion to start dating.
Life went by as usual, we had the honeymoon phase, and then we had a couple small fights, and fell into the routine of trying to build a relationship around our lives, which is probably the hardest thing to do.  I was always busy, and Michelle was unemployed waiting to go into nursing school.  This meant that I was always too tired to do anything, and she had a lot of time on her hands, and wanted to do stuff.
This led to us having a major, major fight where we were about to break up, but again God gave me a slap upside the head and we both decided to try to put Him in the forefront instead of us and our selfishness.  Mentally this was the turning point for me because instead of putting myself first and trying to work Michelle into my life (or work myself into her life), we were both putting God first and catching bits of life as it streamed by.
The side effect of this was that I started going to the Men's Group at church, and as a couple we both started going to Path Fellowship as well.  The topic of Men's Group at the time was a series of talks about our problems and how God's and the community He provides for us are ultimately there to help you grow into a better disciple of Christ.  What that did for me was help me see what a great group of people God had placed in my life, Michelle especially, because she was (and still is) willing to suck up her selfishness and turn to God for strength (instead of me).  Path Fellowship provided the perfect setting to get the idea of marriage started because we were just getting to know each other in the group by sharing testimonies, and on the off week we started doing a series on God's intention for relationships.  Naturally as we were watching the series and the pastor (Voddie Baucham) was preaching, I found myself checking off the list of things that she needed to be and be willing to do (according to the bible).  The second talk was on what the man needed to be and needed to do in order to fulfill his role in a God centered relationship, and again, I found myself checking off the list.  A weekend or 2 later Michelle and I were just talking about our relationship and our goals, etc, and I realized that waiting to be "ready" for marriage was never really going to ever come.  Further thought of my financial situation led to the conclusion that if I didn't have the ability to trust in God now, when would I ever?  So I sucked it up and started looking at how stupidly expensive diamonds are (seriously, who prices this stuff).
At around Christmas time last year, I also got baptized, which symbolized my (finally) dedicating my life to God, and as such I saw it as a new beginning to give up my self to the Lord and His plan for my life.  Somewhere along the line He also saw fit for me to miraculously have just enough money to be able to afford a stupid ring, that luckily (in hindsight) Michelle happened to like.  So I waited for just the right moment (her sharing night) before I had to nut up or shut up, and the rest is history.....awkward, awkward history....you have been warned

Anyway, the whole point of the blog was to just say that from my (admittedly limited) point of view, getting married isn't really about being ready, because if you are a good procrastinator like myself you will NEVER be ready.  Instead I look to God to comfort me when I doubt everything I'm doing, and trust that He will make me ready in His time, and hey, so far so good.

To Video Record? Or Not to Video Record?

Ever since I found out about Same-Day Edits (thanks to people getting married and posting them SDEs on fb), I keep thinking how really, really, really nice it would be to have our wedding video recorded and presented in a movie-like fashion!

Then, Darryn and I got engaged and we started to budget for our wedding.  We got our venues first, then our photographer Ray from Vivid Moments (who is the best choice for many reasons, including the fact that he's within our geographical bubble and that our social circles overlap).  Also, I ended up getting a dress that maxed out that portion of the budget, which meant that there was not much left in terms of videography.  Lately, we found out that flowers are really expensive, and so are other wedding-related expenses.  We figured that once we have it, no one will watch it after the fact.  It'll just get hidden away in some forgotten corner of the house or hard drive.

Since then I've talked to previous brides who agree that having their special day recorded helped them to relive the events of their wedding.  They agree that for the bride and groom, the day gets so crazy that it was difficult to be present in the moment.  The video helped them to look back and listen carefully to speeches, for example, and for one couple in particular, being reminded of the Holy Spirit's presence in their wedding helped them through a very challenging part of their marriage.  I guess most grooms would approach the subject of videography budgeting with utility in mind, and brides are attracted to it for its sentimental value.

For me, having a video will be a motion picture scrapbook (an expensive one!) about our wedding.  We are putting a lot of thought and discernment into every little component of our wedding, and it would be very nice to see how it all plays it out during the wedding day.  I don't come off as an assertive person, but one thing I'm confident about is no matter what happens, it will be an amazing day for not just us, but those closest to us, not because we are so good at planning, but because God makes everything perfect and beautiful.  It's not our wedding; this wedding is His.

So um, the past week, I've been looking at the work of some wedding videographers in the metro Vancouver area and getting a feel of what money can buy.  The really good ones offer packages of over $3000!  I've seen a lot of SDE and highlights which cater to East Asian clientèle.  I've seen a lot of stranger couples' tea ceremonies, red pockets, door crashing games, and humiliated grooms and groomsmen.  Reading up on their bios through Facebook links, I keep thinking how unfortunate that Donna and Nouver (whom I have seen only come in contact with on computer screen) at Wakefield Production will be at their church's retreat the weekend of our wedding.  They would have been perfect because they share in our faith in the Lord!  I even thought about e-mailing them to see if they have recommendations of Christian videographers out there.

God knows what's in my heart and so last night I said, "Okay, Lord, if it is only my will and not Yours then it's all good if we end up not having it.  If this money can be better spent elsewhere, give me your wise counsel when Darryn and I revisit and redefine our budget this weekend."

Guess what.  This morning, Donna from Wakefield e-mails me!  She said that they will be available to film our wedding (I guess it'd be their co-filmers who would be the camera people)!!!!!!!!!!!!  AND that they'd be able to offer us a "significant" discount!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I keep thinking, "Every good and perfect gift is from the Father of heavenly lights..." (James 1:17) and this e-mail is indeed a perfect gift.  Thank you Aaron and Greta for putting in a word for us and we'll see how it goes.  Again, I am just so blessed that our community is excited about us getting married, and that even people whom I have never met are willing to be gracious to us for our wedding!!  Whether we are going to end up having our wedding recorded or not, it's good to know that God is blessing our wedding preparations and affirming us!

This Day 3 Years Ago...

On the 19th of November
Year Two Thousand Ten
Michelle and Darryn sat down to chat
And this is how it went

They, um, like each other a lot (gross!)
But there were so many things
Recent heartbreak and not readiness
They don't want no fling (nuh-uh)

Their feelings were true
Proven again and again (yeahhy)
"If" wasn't the question
The question was, "When"? (Ain't "if" but "when," yo!)

How would they know
When the time is right??
How would they know
When green is the light???

They agreed there'll always be
Excuses to not get together (what!)
The time will never be as right
As it is now than ever (holla)

They vowed that their relationship
Will be serious and unique
They lifted it up to Jesus (Oh Lord!)
Otherwise it would just be weak (Lord Jesus, Amen!)

Darryn said, "Michelle,
My girlfriend will you be?"
Michelle said, "Of course,
Darryn!  Hee hee hee!"

For three years they've laughed
Learned, grown and prayed
Now they'll get hitched
Eight months from today.

Get ready for the next episode (episode).
